This antique Victorian specimen chest of drawers dates from around 1880 to 1900. Made in England, the miniature piece is constructed from walnut with a warm brown burr veneer displaying rich grain patterns, and stands on turned bun feet with fluted side columns and small dark wooden knob handles. Measuring 51 cm high, 38 cm wide and 22 cm deep, it provides a compact desktop storage solution. The chest is designed to sit on top of a table or surface in a study, library or bedroom, serving as a practical home for small collectibles such as coins, trinkets or stationery. The recently re-polished finish gives the surfaces a clean, smooth sheen while maintaining the character of the period timber. Its small proportions make it versatile for placement on desks, sideboards or tabletops where surface space is limited.

A Victorian specimen chest is a compact storage cabinet featuring multiple shallow drawers, originally designed in the nineteenth century to house and organise botanical, geological, or entomological collections.

These chests were typically crafted using fine hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, frequently finished with highly figured burr veneers, hand-cut joinery, and turned wooden handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original wooden knob handles, period-correct timber such as burr walnut, and subtle evidence of age-related wear to the polish and interiors.

A specimen chest functions effectively placed atop a desk, console, or sideboard to provide organised desktop storage for jewellery, stationery, or trinkets while adding historic character.

Position walnut furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer lifting or drying, and nourish the timber using a natural beeswax polish applied with a soft cloth.
