The portrait resides in the original gold frame with a decorative edging and enclosed reverse.

Richard Cosway ranks as one of the greatest miniaturists from the glamourous heyday of miniature painting in Britain. A portrait miniature is a small, highly detailed painting usually executed on ivory, vellum, or card during the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, often worn as personal jewellery or kept as a memento.

These pieces were traditionally painted in watercolour or gouache on thin slices of ivory, paper, or vellum, and set into frames or lockets made from gold, silver, pinchbeck, or brass, often protected by convex glass.

Authenticating involves examining the substrate material under magnification to check for natural grain or stipple brushwork typical of hand painting, inspecting the period frame construction, and looking for artist signatures or historical inscriptions on the reverse.

These small works of art can be displayed by mounting them within a gallery wall of mixed antique silhouettes and small oil paintings, or placed inside a tabletop vitrine to highlight their intricate detail.

They must be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the fading of watercolours and the warping or cracking of delicate historical substrates like ivory.
