Description

A well made early 18thc copper small lidded hot water / milk jug, with attractive turned fruitwood handle and button shape finial.... I really like the early hinge and the castellated seams....always a sign of quality and age....it was lidded as it would have been brought to the table, to top up the hot drinks and would have avoided any spills....in very good condition with no repairs.

English. C1740-60.

Eighteenth-century metalware typically features hand-beaten construction, dovetailed or brazed seams, and heavy-gauge copper or brass fabrication used for domestic food and drink preparation.

These items were predominantly constructed from heavy-gauge sheet copper, often featuring turned wood handles insulated with iron or brass brackets, and occasionally lined with tin.

Authentic pieces display hand-beaten surface irregularities, old soldering repairs, natural oxidation patination, and construction methods predating modern industrial stamping.

Antique copper vessels add warmth and textural contrast when displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or kitchen counters, pairing well with both neutral modern and traditional schemes.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes to retain the historic patination and surface integrity accrued over centuries.
