The Georgian period spans the reigns of the first four British monarchs named George, characterised by classical proportions, sophisticated joinery, and the gradual transition from walnut to mahogany as the preferred timber.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid mahogany or oak for structural frames, incorporating secondary timbers such as deal or pine for drawer linings and back panels, accented with fine boxwood stringing and brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, irregular grain patterns consistent with hand-sawing, original timber shrinkage cracks, and handmade brass pulls rather than modern machine-tooled fixings.

Position the chest against a neutral wall to highlight the rich timber tones, pairing it with modern minimalist art or a simple ceramic lamp to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
