Description

This silk embroidered embroidery was probably made to cover the turban overnight, to keep the dust off. Made around 200 years ago, it is in remarkably good condition, considering the fragility of the materials used. Flowers in pale gold and mid blue are embroidery in silk on to a fine muslin ground. In the very centre you can see someone has tried to preserve some small damaged parts of the ground by couching around it. It is not too noticeable and does not distract from the marvellous flow of the embroidery.

2'8" x 2'10"

Date of Manufacture

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Early Nineteenth Century Bohce to the 1800s.

A bohce is a traditional square wrapping cloth used in the Ottoman Empire to store clothing, bedding, or valuables, and frequently exchanged as part of dowry traditions.

These wrappers were typically crafted from linen or cotton grounds, embellished with surface embroidery using silk, metal thread, or wool in floral and geometric motifs.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-spun fibres, natural dye palettes, traditional stitching techniques, and the characteristic wear consistent with age and domestic use.

These textile pieces are commonly mounted behind conservation-grade glass within a custom frame to function as framed wall art.

To preserve historic fibres, display items away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels, and avoid hanging them in areas prone to excessive temperature fluctuations.
