Description

A really pretty and elegant Bessarabian Kilim woven in the late 19th century, in lovely original condition and with softest of colours.  Each floral element has different tones and design to replicate barley, poppies, and various other flowers.  Using soft greens, pinks and light neutral tones to create the prettiest of kilims.

Bessarabian rugs and carpets are the commonly given name for rugs in pile and tapestry technique originating in Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  Some scholars will classify flat-woven carpets as Bessarabian, while referring to knotted-pile carpets as Ukrainian. They are predominantly from an area corresponding to modern Bulgaria and Romania. Produced under late Ottoman rule, they stand right on the cusp of European and Oriental carpet weaving.

A Bessarabian kilim is a traditional flatweave textile originating from the historical region of Bessarabia, known for its distinctive dark grounds and naturalistic floral motifs influenced by Western European design.

These flatweave carpets are typically constructed using hand-spun wool for the pile and foundation, often combined with natural plant-based dyes to achieve rich, enduring colours.

Authenticity is determined by examining the slit-weave construction technique, natural dye variations, hand-spun wool characteristics, and traditional floral iconography typical of nineteenth-century production.

An antique flatweave rug can be layered over larger neutral seagrass matting or placed on hardwood floors to add texture, warmth, and historical contrast to contemporary living spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without a beater bar, professional textile cleaning when necessary, and the use of a breathable rug underlay to prevent sliding and fibre wear.
