This early 19th-century Georgian mahogany Wellington chest is attributed to Gillows and dates from circa 1820. The piece displays a rich plum mahogany timber finish with warm brown tones across its tall, upright body. Seven graduated drawers run down the front, each fitted with small turned wooden knobs and flanked by plain pilasters. The right-hand pilaster forms a hinged locking side flap secured by a working Bramah lock and key. The chest stands on a simple plinth base beneath a flat projecting top cornice, and the drawer interiors are lined in mahogany. Standing 137.5 cm high by 67.5 cm wide and 48.5 cm deep, this vertical storage cabinet fits into traditional studies, dressing rooms, or bedrooms as a compact repository for personal accessories and small valuables.

Named in honour of the 1st Duke of Wellington, a Wellington chest is a tall, narrow 19th-century cabinet design featuring a vertical tier of drawers secured by a hinged side locking flap.

These pieces were predominantly crafted using solid or veneered mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery and turned timber or brass hardware.

Authentic period examples feature a functional hinged side locking bar with a keyhole, hand-cut dovetail joints on graduated drawers, and original period timber wear on the plinth base.

Due to its narrow footprint and vertical proportion, a Wellington chest serves as practical storage in compact hallway alcoves, dressing rooms, or home offices.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish along the timber grain periodically while avoiding proximity to direct heat radiators.
