This late eighteenth-century Georgian bowfront chest of drawers originates from the workshops of Gillows of Lancaster. The piece uses warm brown mahogany, showcasing distinctive flame mahogany veneer across its four graduated drawers and a smooth polished finish throughout. Brass ring handles with central oval patera complement keyhole escutcheons on the facade, which rests upon splayed bracket feet. Measuring 114.5 cm wide by 62 cm deep and 86.5 cm high, this classic English furniture item provides practical storage capacity. It serves well in a bedroom, hallway or living area of a period home, offering surface display space as well as compartmentalised organisation for clothing or household linens.

FAQs

Georgian bowfront design emerged in the late 18th century, favoured for its curved front profile which softened room proportions. Furniture of this period emphasised neoclassical balance, refined flame mahogany veneers, and subtle geometric embellishments.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly used solid mahogany alongside bookmatched flame mahogany veneers applied over pine or oak carcasses. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak drawer linings, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces from renowned makers often feature precise dovetailing, high-grade timber cuts, and occasionally stamped maker marks on drawer edges. Smoothly operating oak-lined drawers and original brass fittings further indicate period accuracy.

A classic mahogany chest functions well as a focal storage piece in a master bedroom, hallway, or dining space. Its warm timber tones contrast effectively with modern neutral walls, contemporary art, and streamlined lighting fixtures.

Regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and periodic application of beeswax polish maintains the wood finish. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, veneer lifting, and colour fading.
