FAQs

Antique commodes originated as low storage cabinets and evolved significantly during the 18th century, particularly in Italy and France, where cabinet makers utilised figured woods and ornate brass hardware to showcase craftsmanship.

Traditional construction typically involves solid oak or pine secondary timbers, faced with decorative walnut veneers, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints and cast bronze or brass mounts.

Authenticity is determined by examining interior timber ageing, hand-cut dovetail construction, irregularities in hand-cast hardware, and natural shrinkage patterns in the wood veneers.

These pieces can function effectively as anchor furniture in a living room or bedroom, pairing well with minimalist modern decor to highlight their rich textures and historical craftsmanship.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished wooden surface.
