FAQs

Eighteenth-century Italian chests of drawers, frequently referred to as commodes, typically feature figure-grained walnut veneers, parquetry or marquetry inlays, and structured geometric or curved profiles crafted by regional artisans.

Cabinet makers predominantly utilised native woods such as walnut, fruitwood, and olivewood, often applying thick hand-cut veneers over softwood carcases constructed using traditional dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, irregular dovetail joints, original iron or brass lock mechanisms, and hand-planed rear panels or drawer linings.

A warm walnut commode functions effectively as a focal piece in an entrance hall, bedroom, or living space, creating a visual balance when placed beneath contemporary artwork or paired with modern lighting.

Maintain stable ambient humidity away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice per year.
