Antique copper planters and jardinieres gained significant popularity during the 19th century, frequently utilized in Victorian conservatories, orangeries, and formal gardens for housing large palms and exotic plants.

These pieces were traditionally handcrafted from heavy-gauge sheet copper, featuring hand-beaten seams joined by overlapping rivets and reinforced rims to support the weight of wet soil.

Authentic period pieces typically display genuine natural verdigris oxidisation, hand-forged or hand-applied rivets, tool marks from hammering, and heavy-gauge metal construction rather than modern lightweight stamping.

They provide a striking textural contrast when used as indoor cachepots for large house plants, positioned on the floor or sturdy furniture to highlight the warm metallic tones and aged patina.

To preserve the historic patina and verdigris, avoid harsh commercial metal polishes. Dust gently with a soft cloth and line the interior with a modern plastic insert if used with live plants to prevent continuous moisture corrosion.
