A Superb Raj Period Silver, Copper and Brass Repousse Work Charger.

1900 - 1920
Sold 4 October 2024 · Robert Belcher Antiques
This “Superb Raj Period Silver, Copper and Brass Repousse Work Charger” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Belcher Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This extremely fine quality late 19th century Raj period charger is made from heavy gauge brass which is extensively hand decorated with exceptionally fine applied radial panels worked in sheet silver and copper decorated with traditional scenes with Indian dancing figures and deities.

The central figure group is large and circular and it is surrounded by radiating bands of further decoration in the form of small boarders or intricate panels each of which is a work of art in its own right.

This type of repousse work is completely hand done. The method is raising and punching the decoration from the front and back of the sheet silver or copper. Then adding the fine detailing with hand engraving and chasing. This is a highly skilled and very time consuming process.

This particular piece is by far the largest example and most likely the finest charger of its type we have ever had the pleasure to offer for sale.

Indian, circa 1900

Height 40.5cm x with 40.5cm x depth 1cm

Declaration

Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Anglo Indian Repousse Charger to the 1900s.

Anglo-Indian metalwork from the British Raj period typically combines traditional Indian motifs and hand-beating techniques with forms popular in Britain, frequently utilising mixed metals such as copper, brass, and silver.

These decorative items are generally crafted from sheet brass or copper, shaped using hammering and repousse techniques where designs are pushed out from the reverse, often complemented by silver plating or applied white metal highlights.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hammered irregularities, tool marks on the reverse, natural oxidation appropriate to age, and consistent patination across the mixed metal surfaces, differing from machine-stamped modern replicas.

Such pieces function effectively as wall-mounted focal points or displayed on stands within eclectic, maximalist, or traditional interior schemes to introduce metallic texture and cultural narrative.

Preservation requires minimal intervention; dusting with a soft, dry cloth is recommended to protect the historic patina, avoiding abrasive polishes that can strip away silver highlights and oxidisation.
