This Dutch antique log bucket or planter originates from 1900 and uses metal with an aged brass colour. The item has repousse relief decoration depicting a sailing ship on the front, lion mask ring handles on the sides, and detailed shell motifs above the hairy paw feet. Measuring 39 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 39 cm deep, the piece functions practically beside a fireplace hearth for storing logs or as a planter in a hallway or garden room. The sturdy metal construction remains in good strong condition with visible aged patina and wear consistent with regular use over time.

FAQs

Historically, metal log buckets or bins were placed beside hearths to store firewood, coal, or turf, constructed from non-flammable metals like brass, copper, and bronze to prevent fire hazards.

These vessels were formed from sheet metal with raised repousse or stamped detailing, combined with heavy cast metal components such as paw feet, shell brackets, and lion mask drop-handle mounts.

Authentic pieces display evidence of manual metalworking on interior surfaces, folded or riveted joins, heavy cast fittings, and gradual surface oxidisation rather than uniform machine finishes.

A brass log bucket functions effectively as hearth storage for firewood, as an indoor planter container for houseplants, or as a decorative storage vessel in entryways and living spaces.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and washing gently with mild soap and water when necessary, avoiding abrasive polishes that strip natural historical patina.
