Description

A magnificent pair of full size replica 19th Century naval canons.

These full size '3-pound' ship' canons are replicas of the 17th and 18th Century guns that would have lined the sides of battleships during the great armadas on the sea.

The well weathered 38 inch cast iron barrels which are sealed, are mounted on wheeled wooden trolleys with chains that would have been used to strap them to the decks.

These imposing canons would look fantastic on either side of a grand country house entrance or driveway.

Nineteenth-century naval cannons were primarily used as shipboard armament during an era of significant naval warfare evolution, later transitioning into decorative objects for country houses and estates.

Authentic cannons from this era were typically constructed using cast iron or bronze for the barrel, mounted on heavy timber carriages reinforced with iron straps and bolts.

Authentication involves examining the metallurgical composition, foundry marks, the type of oxidisation on the metal, and the construction methods used on the wooden carriage to match period standards.

These statement pieces can be integrated as focal points in a study, library, or hallway, paired with neutral backdrops and warm lighting to highlight their historical textures.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent wood cracking and treating the metal with microcrystalline wax to inhibit rust while preserving the patina.
