Description

A stunning antique burr walnut chest on chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, this is a great size and offers lots of storage space. It has a serpentine front, with a pull out sliding shelf in the middle. There is a lovely dental moulded cornice, the drawers have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints, and this sits on bracket feet. The drawer fronts are cross banded and have high quality brass handles.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent for its age. The burr walnut grain patterns and colours are gorgeous throughout.

The top lifts right off the base and this comes in two halves for ease of transport.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a tall piece of furniture consisting of two separate drawer sections stacked one on top of the other, typically featuring multiple smaller drawers over larger ones.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed with a solid softwood or hardwood carcase, overlaid with decorative veneers such as burr walnut or mahogany, and feature dovetail joints on the drawers and solid brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, natural timber shrinkage, hand-forged or cast brass fixings, and distinct grain patterns in the veneer that reflect period manufacturing methods rather than modern machinery.

This type of furniture can be integrated into modern spaces by pairing it with neutral walls and minimalist surrounding decor to allow the rich wood grain and historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, applying traditional beeswax polish sparingly, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
