Bergere settees originated in France during the early 18th century, evolving from upholstered armchairs into wider seating formats designed for salons and drawing rooms. These pieces became prominent during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, and later experienced revivals throughout the 19th century with eclectic historicist influences.

Authentic period settees typically feature a solid hardwood frame, most commonly walnut, beech, or oak, shaped with hand-carved decorative motifs. The back and sides frequently incorporate fine cane work, paired with loose or drop-in seat cushions traditionally stuffed with natural fibres and upholstered in silk, velvet, or damask.

Identification relies on examining the joinery, timber ageing, and hand-carving techniques. Genuine period items show natural oxidisation in the wood, traditional hand-cut joinery, and slight irregularities in the cane work and carvings that indicate manual craftsmanship rather than modern machine production.

This seating piece functions effectively as a focal point in a living room, study, or bedroom, contrasting cleanly against neutral walls. Pairing the traditional wooden frame and textured cane with contemporary minimalist furniture or lighting creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain caned elements by keeping them away from direct heat sources and occasionally dampening the underside with a clean sponge to prevent the natural fibres from becoming brittle. Clean the wooden frame with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that can degrade historic finishes.
