Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Georgian furniture spans the reigns of the four King Georges (1714 to 1830), encompassing several distinct design movements including Palladian, Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton. It is characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and a transition from heavy walnut to lighter mahogany.

Master cabinetmakers of the period predominantly used imported mahogany for its rich grain and durability, frequently incorporating secondary timbers such as oak and pine for drawer linings and carcases. Decorative veneers, stringing, and brass drop-ring or swan-neck handles were standard finishing details.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer corners, hand-planed backboards, and original timber shrinkage. Period pieces also exhibit subtle irregularities in symmetry and appropriate patination on the wood surfaces.

A period chest of drawers provides a strong grounding focal point when contrasted against neutral contemporary walls. Pairing the warm timber tones with minimalist modern lighting or abstract art creates a balanced transitional aesthetic.

To preserve the timber and finish, keep antique furniture away from direct sunlight and sources of artificial heat to prevent wood splitting. Maintain the surface using natural beeswax periodically, avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
