Description

Since the 16th Century English needlepoints have been hand-stitched on canvas.  During the 19th Century the was a resurgence in their popularity, incorporating floral patterns and birds, in part due to the impact of the growing Arts and Crafts movement.  Pioneered in Britain by figures like William Morris, himself well known for his needlepoint textiles and carpets.

This English Needlepoint was woven in the early 20th century, and has some exquisite detailing with birds sitting on the flowing leafy vines.  The gentlest of colours have been used and woven in panels, this needlepoint has been reduced in size, and we can see some areas of wear in places.  Please view the close up detail images to see the areas of wear and the overall condition.  It would look beautiful hung in an entrance hall, or above a bed for example.

Needlepoint in England has a rich heritage dating back to medieval times, with sophisticated wool and silk stitching techniques flourishing during the Tudor, Elizabethan, and Victorian eras for upholstery, cushions, and wall hangings.

Traditional pieces typically feature hand-spun wool, silk, or metallic threads worked in tent stitch or cross stitch over a hand-woven linen canvas foundation, often utilising natural dyes for rich colour palettes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the fibre content, natural dye fading patterns, hand-spun inconsistencies in the yarn, the type of canvas weave, and the wear patterns consistent with age.

Framing historical textiles as large-scale wall art or mounting them professionally introduces rich texture, historical depth, and warmth into contemporary or traditional spaces.

Preservation requires framing behind UV-protective glass to prevent fading, avoiding direct sunlight and high humidity, and consulting a textile conservator for professional cleaning.
