The George III period spanned from 1760 to 1820, characterised by classical proportions, refined neoclassical influences, and the widespread use of high-quality mahogany. Master cabinetmakers like Thomas Chippendale and George Hepplewhite heavily influenced the elegance, symmetry, and craftsmanship of this era.

Authentic pieces from this era predominantly utilised dense Cuban or Honduras mahogany, often featuring secondary woods like oak or pine for drawer linings and carcases. Construction typically involved hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged joints, and solid brass hardware affixed with cast-backplate handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails with minor irregularities, and natural timber shrinkage over centuries. Look for signs of age-appropriate oxidisation on internal secondary woods, original brass fittings or properly filled old screw holes, and hand-planed backboards.

To integrate historical pieces into modern spaces, pair them with minimalist walls and neutral palettes to let the rich wood grain stand out as a focal point. Contrast the traditional dark timber with contemporary art, modern ceramics, or sleek lighting to create a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, which can cause the wood to warp or split. Apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain, and avoid using silicone-based commercial polishes that can degrade the patina.
