Description

Here are such an elegant pair of 19th Century Watercolours by the Victorian painter Marion Chase R.I, one of apples against a mossy background, the other of a branch of ripened plums.

Born Marion Emma Chase in 1844, in Fitzroy Square in London, to the artist John Chase (who had trained under John Constable ) , and his wife Margaret Gillies a pioneer in the Suffragete movement, Marion had certainly entered an artistic family..

After training and working as a draftsperson, it wasn't long before Marion became an artist in her own right and was well known for her still life paintings of flowers and fruit, celebrated for her delicate handling, and truthful representations of the wild fruits and flowers to be found in the English countryside.- these two paintings are certainly a superb example of that.

A member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours - she also exhibited at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists and examples of her work can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Both paintings are behind glass in matching gilded frames, with the name signed within the frame itself. The colours of both paintings are still bright and vibrant - the bluey-purple of the plums is sublime, and you can almost feel their soft skins.

I have had both frames cleaned by Fine Art restorer James Bloomfield - they are in good order, but have the gentle surface to be expected for their age. The paintings measure 27cm by 27cm, with the images measuring 13cm by 13cm.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide any further information or photographs.

I offer free postage across Mainland UK, and am more than happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

During the Victorian era, botanical and still life watercolours gained immense popularity, often produced by skilled artists documenting nature, horticulture, and domestic subjects with meticulous detail.

These works typically utilised finely ground pigments on rag paper or watercolour board, framed in gilt wood moulding, often featuring layered mounts to protect the delicate medium.

Authenticity is assessed through paper fibre analysis, period-appropriate framing techniques, artist signatures or monograms, and exhibition labels or provenance records on the reverse.

Pairing historic framed works with modern minimalist walls or grouped in gallery arrangements creates a striking juxtaposition that highlights their traditional craftsmanship.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading and paper degradation, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and archival backing.
