FAQs

Originating in France during the late 17th century, the commode evolved from a low chest or cabinet into a sophisticated form of storage furniture featuring multiple drawers and often an ornamental marble top.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from solid oak or pine frameworks with fine timber veneers such as walnut, mahogany, or fruitwood, joined using traditional dovetail joints and accompanied by hand-cast brass or bronze hardware.

Authenticity is assessed through examining hand-cut dovetail construction, tool marks on internal timbers, the natural ageing and patination of the wood veneers, and period-appropriate hardware fixed with hand-threaded screws.

This piece works effectively as a focal point in a living room, hallway, or bedroom, paired with minimalist modern art and contemporary lighting to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wooden surface.
