Description

A rare and interesting Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Child's Alphabet Plate, "B Was a Butcher".  While the subject matter might perhaps nowadays be considered a little dark, such plates were once commonplace aids to learning, possibly drawing inspiration from the earlier "Merry Man" plates. Many were inspired by Nursery Rhymes, less regarded in today's world of mobile phones and computers, but perennially popular with children throughout the  nineteenth century. The flavour of this bygone world may still be savoured today online at Gutenberg's "The Nursery Rhymes of England" ~

Antique alphabet plates are small ceramic dishes produced primarily during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were designed as educational and moral tools for children, featuring letters of the alphabet, nursery rhymes, or didactic illustrations.

These plates were typically made from earthenware, creamware, or ironstone. Decorations were frequently applied using the transfer printing technique, often supplemented with hand-painted highlights in colours such as red, blue, and green.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the crazing of the glaze, the depth and softness of the transfer print, wear patterns on the base, and manufacturing imperfections typical of historic kilns, such as stilt marks.

These plates can be mounted on walls using specialized plate hangers, displayed on plate racks, or styled on mantelpieces and bookshelves utilizing small display stands to add historical interest and visual texture.

Historic plates should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of hand-painted pigments. They should be cleaned strictly by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and must never be submerged in water or placed in a dishwasher due to fragile glazes.
