Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian mahogany pedestal desk from 1850 provides a practical workspace for a study or home office. The warm brown timber is complemented by a moulded top edge, turned bun feet, and carved spandrels around the kneehole arch. Nine mahogany-lined drawers hold original turned wooden knob handles, complete with keyholes. Measuring 79 cm high, 124 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, the unit stands as a single solid piece. Placement in a traditional library, home study, or living room provides a functional surface for writing and laptop use. The pedestal configuration offers ample storage for stationery and documents, while the compact depth ensures it fits comfortably against a wall or within a study alcove.

FAQs

A Victorian pedestal desk typically consists of two vertical banks of drawers supporting a flat writing surface with a central frieze drawer above a kneehole space. Popularised during the nineteenth century, these desks provided substantial storage and functional workspaces for professional and domestic offices.

Victorian desks were predominantly constructed from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, frequently finished with flame mahogany veneers on drawer fronts. Secondary timbers like pine or oak were utilised for internal drawer linings, held together with hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned wooden or brass handles. Look for natural age-related wear, hand-planed secondary timbers, original locks, and turned feet consistent with nineteenth-century cabinetmaking techniques.

Position the desk as a focal centerpiece in a home office or library, paired with a modern ergonomic desk chair to create a balanced contrast. Complement the deep timber tones with brass task lighting and minimalist desktop accessories.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, cracking, or fading.
