Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Hand-cut dovetails on the drawer sides: hand craftsmanship before machine cutting.
Wide pine backboards with shrinkage gaps: timber dried and settled naturally over generations.
Inset engraved brass numbering roundels: original fitting for library or institutional use.
Cockbeaded drawer edges in dense mahogany: cabinet practice before Victorian mass manufacture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This unusual Georgian mahogany chest of drawers dates from circa 1830. The piece takes a wide rectangular form in a warm brown timber with a polished finish, incorporating a moulded top edge and raised on bracket feet. The thirteen drawers are arranged in two banks of five flanked by three smaller drawers across the top, all fitted with brass swan-neck handles and small brass escutcheons. The drawer fronts also feature inset circular brass numbers. It measures 96.5 cm high, 146 cm wide and 46 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large storage piece suits a spacious bedroom, study or hallway. The substantial proportions provide ample capacity for organizing clothing, papers or collection items on multiple levels.

Georgian period furniture, spanning from 1714 to 1830, is characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and the widespread use of high-quality imported mahogany. Common details include swan-neck handles, crisp mouldings, and sturdy bracket feet.

Chests from this era typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints on solid timber drawer linings, solid mahogany drawer fronts, and cast brass drop handles paired with stamped escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of hand-planing on the back and drawer bottoms, irregular dovetail spacing, natural timber shrinkage around keyholes, and historic oxidisation on original brass fittings.

A wide mahogany chest serves as a strong anchor piece in an entryway or living space beneath modern artwork. Pair the rich wood tones with neutral wall colours and contemporary ceramic accents to balance the traditional aesthetic.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft cloth and apply a beeswax polish along the grain twice a year. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid drying out the timber or causing movement in the wood.
