Originating in the late nineteenth century, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasized handcraftsmanship and simple forms over mass industrial production. Metalworkers crafted fireside items such as scuttles and fire dogs using hammered copper, brass, and hand-forged wrought iron.

Coal scuttles were typically made from sheets of copper or brass joined with copper rivets, often featuring wrought iron handles. Fire dogs were primarily forged from heavy wrought iron or cast iron to withstand high heat inside the fireplace.

Authentic pieces display signs of manual construction, such as visible hand-hammered indentations, hand-riveted seams, and irregular forge marks on ironwork. Period items also exhibit natural surface oxidisation and wear consistent with age and exposure to coal dust or heat.

A copper coal scuttle and wrought iron fire dogs can be placed alongside modern log burners, open hearths, or decorative non-working fireplaces. The warmth of the copper metalwork creates visual contrast when set against stone, brick, or contemporary painted plasterwork.

Maintain copper by dusting with a soft dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes if preserving the aged patina is desired. Ironwork should be kept dry and occasionally treated with a light coating of microcrystalline wax to prevent rust formation.
