A slim & small proportioned antique satinwood inlaid mahogany chest of drawers. This was made in England & dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

The quality is superb, there is gorgeous satin wood inlay around the top edge and drawer fronts. The brass handles are original and are also of very high quality, this sits on nicely shaped splayed bracket feet. The carcass is solid mahogany and has interesting exposed dovetailed joints on the front in between the drawers.

Satinwood inlay became prominent during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly within the Georgian and Regency periods, when cabinet makers utilised contrasting exotic timbers to create decorative borders and geometric panels on foundational furniture pieces.

Authentic period chests are traditionally constructed from solid timber carcases with dense mahogany drawer fronts, often accented with contrasting satinwood crossbanding or stringing, and assembled using hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetailing on drawer construction, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, visible tool marks, and natural timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with age.

Such pieces serve as functional statement furniture in modern bedrooms or hallways, providing rich texture and historical contrast against neutral walls or minimalist architectural elements.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood surface.
