FAQs

A davenport is a compact form of small writing desk originating in the late 18th century and remaining popular through the Victorian era, typically featuring a sloping, hinged writing surface and a pedestal of drawers to one side.

These desks were commonly crafted from high-quality hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or burr walnut veneer, often accented with hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass hardware, and intricate marquetry or inlay.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, secondary timbers like oak or pine, and natural age-related patination on the wood and leather.

This compact desk functions effectively as a focal point in a home study or living room, contrasting cleanly against minimalist modern walls while providing practical surface space.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally applying quality beeswax, keeping the furniture away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking.
