Description

A well worn antique Afgan Baluch rug. 193 cm by 108 cm. Worn and without holes perfectly suitable for a trunk type coffee table as the surrounding colour and pattern is good. Lots of photos showing its condition and colour well, some shown in unfavourable light. Some edging missing (stitched) but the lattice pattern can be seen. Ideal for a country house where perfection doesn't fit well. It is clean. The wear would suggest it was made before 1900.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Baluch rugs are traditionally woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes inhabiting the borderlands between Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, typically characterised by dark colour palettes, rich geometric motifs, and the use of wool pile on wool foundations.

These textiles are traditionally hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun sheeps wool dyed with natural pigments, often featuring goat hair or cotton in the foundation weaves and selvedges.

Authenticity is assessed through the inspection of the wool quality, natural abrash colour variations, asymmetrical knotting styles, and the presence of traditional geometric or tree-of-life motifs native to Baluch weaving traditions.

A tribal textile brings warmth and texture to modern schemes, functioning effectively as a grounding element on hardwood floors or layered over larger neutral carpets to add visual depth.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotary brushes, professional specialist cleaning when necessary, and rotation every few months to ensure even wear and light exposure.
