He was perhaps the most celebrated painter and decorative artist of the 18th century.

Nineteenth-century miniature paintings often revived the pastoral and romantic themes popularised by French artists like Francois Boucher during the Rococo period, catering to a collector market desiring portable, highly detailed classical artwork.

These pieces typically feature delicate pigment application on ivory, vellum, or prepared card, housed in deep wooden frames with gilded brass or gilt-wood inner liners to enhance the visual depth of the small composition.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted brushwork under magnification rather than mechanical dot patterns, use period-appropriate pigments, and are enclosed in frames showing genuine age-related wear, oxidisation, and traditional joinery.

Such small-scale artworks work effectively when grouped in a gallery wall arrangement, displayed on narrow ledges, or placed on specialist miniature easel stands to draw the eye closer to their intricate details.

Preservation requires displaying the artwork away from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and avoiding harsh cleaning agents on both the delicate painted surface and the antique frame.
