Description

A rustic antique Mahal carpet woven around 1890-1900, over 120 years old, beautifully hand-woven with terracotta, orange rust tones, ivory corners and subtle golden yellow centre diamond.  A deep indigo blue border frames this colour palette so well, some scattered areas of wear, but structurally secure and in original condition. In a rare square size too, at 332 x 328 cm.

A beautiful carpet for a drawing room, bedroom, study or entrance hall.  We would supply sturdy anti-slip underlay with this carpet, to aid its strength on the floor and it also helps preserve the carpet too.  As wear is more-often caused by a carpet moving on a floor, creating creases which over time turn into wear.

We would happily welcome you contacting us to request a home visit, having visited customers in their own homes for over 30 years. Mahal carpets originate from the Markazi province of Iran, specifically the region surrounding Sultanabad, and gained prominence in the late 19th century due to Western demand for large-scale, decorative floor coverings suited to grand interiors.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, dyed with natural vegetal and mineral colorants, and constructed on a cotton or wool warp and weft.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural color variations known as abrash, hand-spun wool with organic irregularities, traditional asymmetrical or symmetrical Persian knots, and characteristic large-scale, open floral or geometric medallion designs typical of the late Qajar period.
