Description

This early 20th-century oil painting by Belgian artist Philippe Swyncop (1878-1949) depicts a colourful street in Fontarrabie, Spain.

Fontarrabie, or Hondarribia as it’s known in Spanish, is a charming historic town situated close to the French border. Its oldest streets are surrounded by a 15th-century wall and entered via a gateway that resembles a tiny castle. Here, the view is taken from the Denda Kalea looking towards the impressive 16th-century Gothic church of Santa Maria de la Asuncion.

One can imagine Swyncop enjoying his stay, weaving along the undulant cobbles and pausing to feast at the various eateries. It’s an inspiring location with vantage points near the church that provide an elevated view of the enchanting Bay of Chingudi.

Signed/dated lower left and held within a later frame.

Medium: Oil on wood

Overall size: 17” x 20½” / 43cm x 52cm

Year of creation: 1924

Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

Artist’s auction maximum: £6,738

Belgian artist Philippe Swyncop is predominantly known for his spirited portraits, figures and still lifes. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under Constant Montald and Jean-François Portaels. Impressionism from this period is characterised by visible brushstrokes, an emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities, and ordinary subject matter such as streetscapes or domestic scenes.

Artists typically used stretched woven linen or cotton canvas primed with gesso, ground pigment paints suspended in linseed or walnut oil, and handcrafted wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave for age-appropriate oxidisation, inspecting the stretcher bars and framing techniques, looking for artist signatures, and checking for craquelure in the paint layer.

An antique painting adds historical contrast and focal depth when hung against neutral walls, paired with minimalist contemporary furnishings to let the artwork draw the eye.

Preserve the integrity of the artwork by keeping it out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and dusting the canvas and frame gently with a dry, soft brush.
