Description

An absolute stunner! One of the best 'namakdans' (salt-bags) to come my way for a while. Particularly interesting as it was made by the Amaleh sub-tribe of the Qashqa'i Confederacy during the second half of the nineteenth century. It is in beautiful, complete condition with a knotted-pile face and a white cotton back. The madder-red central field comprises tiny, stylised botehs in magnificent, natural golden-yellow and surrounded by a golden-yellow inner border. The outer surrounding border is in ivory wool and the original selvedge seals the bag with wool in different colours. The top opening is also complete with wool cords and brocaded lappits. This is a truly magnificent and highly collectable salt-bag.

Size: 67cm x 59cm (2' 2" x 1' 11").

An antique Persian salt bag, or namakdan, is a utilitarian nomadic textile traditionally woven by tribal women in south-west Persia to store and transport rock salt for livestock.

These functional bags are typically constructed using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile and foundation, often incorporating supplementary weft-float patterns or flatweave kelim backs, dyed with natural vegetable colorants.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the handle spin of the wool, the presence of natural organic dyes, structural irregularities indicative of tribal manufacture, and traditional iconography specific to confederations like the Qashqai.

These small-scale textiles can be mounted on linen as framed wall art, displayed on stands, or positioned as accent pieces on sideboards to introduce rich texture and colour into contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle vacuuming through a mesh screen, keeping items out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and storing them in clean, dry, insect-deterrent environments.
