Can two antique single beds be joined together?

Dozens of pair listings say so directly, using phrases like "can be joined", "joinable" and "super king if together". It's one of the commonest notes in the category. The iron and brass pairs carry it most often, frequently alongside "no end" or "platform" in the same title.

Why are single beds usually sold in pairs?
