Originating in the early 19th century during the Empire and Regency periods, the sleigh bed (or lit bateau) is inspired by ancient Greco-Roman seating. Characterised by outward-curving headboards and footboards, the style quickly spread across Europe and became a staple of classic bedroom furniture.

Authentic period frames were typically constructed from carved hardwoods or softwoods coated with gesso, a smooth plaster mixture. Water gilding or oil gilding was then applied using thin gold leaf over a coloured bole base, resulting in a burnished metallic surface.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carved joinery, natural wear or rubbing on high points revealing the underlying red or grey bole, and original iron or timber bolt fixtures connecting the side rails to the bed ends.
