Antique Caucasian Shirvan Baku Long Rug, Surhani Garden Design, Dated 1310 (1892).

19th century
Description

Size: 10ft 11in x 4ft 8in (332 x 142cm).

Antique Caucasian Shirvan Baku long rug with 'Surahani' garden design.

Dated 1310 (1892).

A good example of a Shirvan rug, with the sought after garden design often associated with the village of Surahani, which is Northeast of Baku in the Eastern Caucasus. This example is of a large size and attractive colour palette, the borders are well drawn and the chevron design is typical of the Baku region.

The rug is a scarce example of a clearly dated Caucasian rug, dated 1310 which converts to 1893 / 1893.

The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile, there are a few scatted old re-weaves which are well blended. The rug has a very slightly faded country house look.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Caucasian Shirvan rugs originated in the eastern Caucasus region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are characterised by fine wool pile, precise geometric motifs, vibrant natural dyes, and complex multiple border structures.

These textiles were hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation. Dyes were derived from natural plants and minerals, producing enduring shades of madder red, indigo blue, ivory, and ochre.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tied asymmetrical or symmetrical knots, natural dye variations known as abrash, flexible wool foundations, and geometric design elements traditional to specific Caucasian weaving villages.

A long tribal rug adds visual structure and warmth to corridors, entryways, or open-plan living spaces. Its bold geometric iconography grounds neutral modern flooring and contrasts effectively with both minimalist and traditional timber furniture.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush bar to avoid damaging fibers. Use a high-quality rug pad beneath the textile to prevent slippage and reduce wear, and rotate the rug periodically to ensure even exposure to light and traffic.
