FAQs

Marine oil paintings traditionally depict ships, coastal scenes, or maritime events, using layered oil pigments on canvas to capture light, movement, and atmospheric depth on the water.

These works generally feature hand-stretched woven canvas, traditional oil-based pigments, and frames constructed from gesso-moulded wood, often finished with gold leaf or metallic gilding.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, craquelure in the oil paint layer, historical signatures or inscriptions, and the type of fixings on the reverse.

Hang the piece as a focal point against a neutral or dark-toned wall, allowing the gilded frame to provide textural contrast and historical depth within a modern minimalist scheme.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels, clean the canvas gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid using liquid cleaners or chemical solvents.
