Capturing a moment of summertime leisure, this evocative oil painting by Clement Castelli (1870–1959) showcases his love for dappled light and the intimate charm of the French countryside. Our ''Picnic in the Park'' is a lovely example of Castelli’s ability to find poetic beauty in everyday life. Conjuring the warmth of a French summer afternoon, the work invites the viewer to step into this peaceful, bygone world.
Born in the Piedmont region of Italy, Castelli came to live in Paris with his parents in 1880. He returned to Italy to study at the Free Academy of Rome and subsequently studied under the painters Jules Adler and Léon Bellemont in France. He frequently returned to Italy for numerous artistic commissions.
Castelli was celebrated as a Painter of Mountains and was a founding member of the Society of Mountain Painters, but his versatility extended far beyond the Alps. In 1925 , he received a vermeil medal from King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy , and the city of Domodossola... purchased two of his paintings for its museum. The city of Paris awarded him a silver medal at the Salon Violet exhibition in 1938.
He was an officer of the Academy and in 1948, one of his paintings was admitted to the Louvre Museum.
Castelli was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon des Indépendants, where he was lauded for his sensitive handling of landscape and atmosphere. His work is characterised by a ''plein-air'' freshness, influenced by the Impressionist legacy.
Our oil on paper mounted on to board is signed at the lower left and bears the artist''s stamp to the verso. Measuring 22.5 x 32 cm, the overall size in a hand carved stripped period frame is 35 x 45 cm.
