Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century portraiture emphasizes realistic human likeness, formal sitter poses, and controlled lighting techniques. Works from this era often display dark, neutral backgrounds paired with detailed rendering of clothing to reflect the social standing of the subject.

These works were created using natural oil-based pigments applied to hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames from the period were typically constructed from carved timber covered in gesso and finished with hand-applied gold leaf.

Authentic period paintings show fine surface cracking known as craquelure, natural darkening of the varnish, and oxidation on the back of the canvas stretcher. Older frames also exhibit natural wear, gilding loss, and aged wood joinery.

An antique portrait can serve as a focal point above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall. Modern interior design frequently pairs traditional framed oil artwork with contemporary lighting or minimalist furniture to create visual contrast.

Clean the artwork gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove surface dust without disturbing the paint layer. Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiator heat sources, and areas with high humidity to prevent cracking or canvas warping.
