Colossal 18th Century Lidded Copper Pitcher

18th century
Description

Here is an enormous lidded copper pitcher acquired from an estate sale in Scotland and collected on travels presumably in the Middle East sometime during the 19th Century.

The pitcher stands 46cm tall and 26cm across its widest part and has a wonderful rich, warm patina, (and undoubtedly has some wonderful rich stories to go along with it!) It is in great condition, with all the surface wear you would expect from a well loved piece of this age, but which of course adds to its charm.

The lid has an anthropomorphic design with a pair of eyes staring out from the back, and also has a makers crest or mark to the top, with a large 'x' incised on the bottom.

A rare and unique shape, I have scoured the internet and not found any similar - this is a real statement piece and would look great in any home.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further images or information.

I offer free delivery to mainland UK, and am more than happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Lidded copper pitchers were widely produced in the 18th century across Europe for utilitarian purposes such as carrying water, cider, or ale, with the lid serving to protect contents from dust and insects.

These vessels were hand-hammered from sheet copper, featuring brazed or dovetailed seams, rolled rims, and heavy cast handles attached with durable rivets.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hammered surface irregularities, visible brazed seam lines, copper or brass rivets, and natural patination or verdigris accumulation.

Large copper pitchers serve as focal points when styled on a rustic fireplace hearth, modern kitchen island, or wooden sideboard alongside dried botanical arrangements.

To preserve historical patination, clean gently with a soft cloth and warm water, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners that strip natural oxidation.
