Description

Size: 6ft 4in x 3ft 11in (193 x 120cm).

Antique Turkish Sivas multi niche saf prayer rug of classic design with good colour.

Circa 1900.

The rug has very pleasing colours including a clear red in the three prayer niches, the multiple borders frame the rug well. There are old brass hanging rings attached to the back.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, there are a few small spots of slightly lower pile and a few old repairs. The rug is made with excellent quality wool.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display. The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

A Saf is a traditional Anatolian multi-niche prayer rug woven with multiple side-by-side prayer arches, originating from the Sivas region of central Turkey.

Sivas rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool pile on a wool or cotton foundation, coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces feature Anatolian symmetrical knotting, hand-spun wool showing natural dye abrash variations, and traditional stepped mihrab arch motifs within a structured border.
