Large Brass Planter

19th century
Description

A superb solid brass planter quite possibly of Dutch origins. The side handles have cast lion masks, above embossed fluting and a nicely rimmed foot. Larger than average and will look impressive with a flower arrangement. Could also be used as a drinks container. Not knocked about and looks super now it has been cleaned and polished.

A cachepot, originating from the French term meaning hide a pot, was developed to conceal plain terracotta flowerpots inside decorative metal or ceramic vessels. During the nineteenth century, brass jardinieres became standard features in European homes to display exotic houseplants and foliage indoors.

Historic brass planters were commonly constructed from sheet brass shaped over molds, with decorative detailing applied via repousse and chasing techniques. Handles and bases were often cast separately from solid brass or bronze and riveted or brazed onto the primary body.
