FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ware produced in the Arita region from the seventeenth century onwards, famously named after the port of Imari. It typically features vibrant underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gold gilding, and colourful floral or geometric motifs.

Imari pieces were crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, producing a dense white porcelain body. The production involved painting initial designs in cobalt blue prior to glazing and high-temperature firing, followed by hand-application of enamel colours and gold leaf during subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces often display slight irregularities in shape, subtle spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, and evidence of hand-painted brushwork. Antique Imari also exhibits deep, rich cobalt hues along with light surface rubbing to the hand-applied enamels and gilding.

An Imari charger serves as a focal point when supported on a plate stand atop a sideboard, placed within a display cabinet, or mounted on a wall. Its rich colour palette and intricate patterns complement both traditional timber furnishings and understated contemporary decor.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. If washing is required, use lukewarm water with a mild pH-neutral detergent, avoiding immersion or abrasive sponges that could wear away delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
