A good quality George II and later walnut secretaire chest, the top with projecting canted corners over two short drawers, secretaire drawer and two long drawers, the cross banded borders with feather line inlay, gilt brass rococo handles and flanked by channel moulded pilasters with gilt gesso Corinthian column capitals, raised on ogee bracket feet.

The are oak lined and with original handles. The ogee bracket feet appear to be original, taken from the lower section of the chest on chest.

The George II period, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by a transition from heavier walnut designs to more elaborate mahogany pieces, featuring architectural elements, carved details, and robust proportions.

These pieces typically utilized native timbers such as oak for carcase construction and drawer linings, faced with decorative veneers like walnut or mahogany, often assembled with hand-cut dovetails and solid brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage consistent with age, original secondary woods like oak or pine, and appropriate patination on the brass fixings.

Integrating a dark wood antique into a modern room provides textural contrast and historical weight; it can be paired with neutral walls and minimalist lighting to let the wood grain stand out as a focal point.

Maintain stable relative humidity and temperature away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
