Description:

Here is a fine quality Victorian oak buffet sideboard, also known as a buffet server, constructed from solid oak, decorated with fine quality Green Man carvings, circa 1880, in excellent original condition. The Victorian oak buffet sideboard is constructed with two tiers, which incorporates two working drawers below a lower shelf, and two cupboard doors below, incorporating storage shelves and a pull-out drawer tray to the right-hand side. The Victorian oak buffet sideboard boasts fine quality leaf, fruit and scroll carvings, interspersed with Green Man face carvings to the mouldings, frame, drawer fronts and door panels. Green Man carvings acted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring, and held great influence in architecture and design during the Victorian period. The Green Man face carvings act as drawer handles to the top two drawers, flanked by scroll carvings. The drawers are oak lined and are constructed with hand-dovetailed joints. The two-tiers are supported by tapering fluted columns at the front, with carved scalloped rectangular supports to the rear. The lower section comprises two cupboard doors, also carved with Green Man face carvings encompassed by scroll carvings and a bobbin moulded frame. The two doors are flanked by fine carved columns comprising further Green Man face carvings within a trail of floral leaves. Th doors open to reveal a shelf on the left-hand side and a pull-out drawer on the right-hand side. The right-hand drawer retains its original working lever lock, with working key. The Victorian oak buffet sideboard terminates on a carved moulded breakfront plinth base.

The Green Man is a legendary being primarily interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, representing the cycle of new growth that occurs every spring.

Condition Report:

Nominal old use marks and shakes to the timber to the top, and leading edges, but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The Victorian oak buffet has been cleaned and wax polished in our workshop. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic rich red-brown mahogany colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The Victorian oak buffet retains all its original carvings, which are intact, without damage. The right-hand drawer retains its original working lever lock, with working key. This Victorian oak sideboard is well constructed, solid in joint and is ready to be used.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Green Man motifs feature mythological faces composed of or surrounded by foliage, which gained significant popularity during the Gothic Revival and late Victorian periods in Britain.

Victorian buffets were typically constructed from solid oak, often quarter-sawn to reveal prominent grain patterns, with hand-carved relief panels and turned supporting pillars.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate construction markers such as hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast iron or brass fittings, and signs of natural age-related patina on oak surfaces.

A Victorian server works well as a focal point in a dining room, hallway, or living space, contrasted against neutral walls or paired with contemporary ceramics.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain annually to protect the original finish and wood structure.
