These in the days of candlelight were for the uber rich merchants of the day c1690 to write at and to hide their valuables and money

They were really secret safes.

Always they have a big impressive lock on the fall, hard work to pick by candlelight.and if managed.where do you start looking for valuables? They always have secret drawers a couple I have photographed.

This example is of the highest quality with wonderful hand picked walnut and burr walnut veneers.also banded with contrasting herringbone banding.

The drawer liners are oak

The lock escutcheon is original the brass handles are georgian replacements which we have chosen to keep on it c1770
