This nineteenth-century Japanese Meiji period jardinière planter takes the form of a heavy dark brown bronze bowl with a lobed body and an everted rim. Raised high-relief carvings of birds perched on blossoming branches wrap around the exterior panels, while minor historic knocks, surface marks, and visible repairs bear witness to its age. The overall maximum dimensions measure 26 cm in diameter by 19 cm high, with a mouth diameter of 18 cm and a weight of 2.6 kg. Because minor perforations render the vessel not watertight, it requires a protective liner. Placed upon a sideboard top within a sunlit conservatory or a living space, the bowl functions as a decorative container for potted greenery or floral arrangements. The dark bronze finish and patinated surface complement traditional and eclectic interior schemes alike. Periodic dusting maintains the material, and handling the item with care preserves the bronze body and its historic repairs.

Meiji period bronze work (18681912) is renowned for detailed lost-wax casting, intricate hand-chasing, and dynamic naturalistic subjects. During this era, former sword-smiths and artisan metalworkers shifted their skills toward creating decorative vessels, sculptures, and display pieces for export to Western markets.

These vessels were typically cast using the lost-wax technique (cire perdue), allowing for deep high-relief designs. Following casting, artisans manually chiselled, engraved, and hand-chased details such as bird plumage and floral petals before applying chemical surface patinations.

Authentic pieces exhibit considerable weight, hand-finished relief carving with distinct crisp details, and natural patination from age rather than painted surfaces. Look for traditional motifs such as birds of prey, cherry blossoms, or dragons, alongside potential cast or incised signatures on the base.

A bronze jardiniere functions as a striking statement centrepiece on a console, sideboard, or foyer table. It can be left empty as a sculptural accent or used to hold potted indoor plants such as orchids and ferns, blending historical texture with modern foliage.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove loose debris. Avoid using liquid polishes, abrasive pads, or chemical solvents that strip the original patination; a light application of clear microcrystalline wax can be buffed on to protect the metal surface.
