19th Century Satinbirch Childs Wellington Chest

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century Satinbirch Wood, Childs Size Wellington Chest, Having Eight Drawers With Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Enclosed By Locking Pilaster.

Childs size examples of the typical wellington chest of drawers are generally much rarer to find than their full size counterparts, particularly those that are constructed from a particularly unusual wood, or that are of much better quality than the norm, which this example is both of.

It is constructed from satinbirch, an wood indigenous to the UK amongst other places and as the name suggests a type of birch. When the cabinet maker cut across the grain it would create this incredibly decorative, wavy type effect, hence the satin name. Satin birch wood was mainly used in the mid 19th century, often as a substitute for satinwood itself, which was becoming harder and harder to get hold of and as a result more and more expensive.

This is an incredibly useful, functional and practical piece of furniture around the modern home of course, absolutely perfect for a whole host of places, including as a coffee table beside a settee or chair, as a bedside table, or even as an additional storage piece in a bedroom or office, offering great solutions.

The item comes with working lock and key and just like all the items which we offer for sale it has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled and trained, traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a general clean and tidy plus natural beeswax to ensure it is ready for immediate use once sold.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest is a tall, narrow cabinet featuring a single column of drawers secured by a hinged side flap that locks over the drawer edges. Named after the Duke of Wellington following his victory at Waterloo, this design gained popularity during the 19th century for its compact footprint and security features.

19th-century Wellington chests were typically crafted from fine timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or satinbirch, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints and solid drawer linings. They traditionally incorporate a plinth base, turned wooden handles, and a side-locking hinged bar controlled by a single keyhole.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-cut dovetails inside the drawers, original brass lock mechanisms within the side flap, and naturally aged timber with authentic patination. Look for carved corbels flanking the top drawer and precise fitting of the side-locking pillar against the drawer fronts.

A compact Wellington chest functions effectively as a side cabinet in a home office, a hallway feature piece, or an accent chest in a bedroom alcove. Its slender profile allows it to fit into narrow spaces while providing structured vertical storage.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and excessive moisture to prevent veneer movement or timber warping.
