A beautifully crafted Victorian oak bureau cabinet by Simpson & Sons of Halifax Circa 1890. The stepped upper cabinet opens to reveal a wonderful fitted interior of pigeon holes and two stationery drawers, flanked on each side with hinged letter racks with inset shelves. The central writing slope measures 66cm x 46cm. The carved detail to its front is a particular feature of the cabinet. Having a gadrooned border to the fall front with inset carved scallop shell with scrolling floral detail. Flanked either side by rosette roundels in panels and reeded detail. The original brass handles with pierced attractive back plates. The serpentine sides have matching reeded detail and the whole is raised on a moulded plinth base. Retaining its original enamel maker''s badge with key present. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed. A truly wonderful example of English cabinet making from the period retaining its wonderful rich colour. A functional piece of antique furniture that would grace any i...nterior.
Simpson & Sons were cabinet makers, furnishers, upholsterers, decorators, removal and storage business. Established in 1798 by Thomas Simpson
In 1815. They moved to Waterhouse Street where they remained for 40 years. In 1886, they moved to new premises in Silver Street which were built on the site of the White Lion Hotel & Posting House. They manufactured at their Steam Cabinet Works in Corporation Street, Halifax and were one of the largest furnishers in the north of England.
In 1887 they acquired the carpet merchanting business of John Crossley & Sons Limited which had been in Town Hall Street East, Halifax.
Up to 1895, the firm had been run by 3 generations with the name Thomas Simpson. In 1936, they were listed as Simpson & Sons Limited with premises at Silver Street and Skircoat Road. The business closed in 1957
