Pair 19thc Watercolours Alfred Rimmer 1829-1893)

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A beautiful pair of 19thc watercolours of quintessential country scenes each signed by Alfred Rimmer (1829-1893) and dated (indistinctly) 1874.

Alfred Rimmer was an artist and author, born in Liverpool 1829. He trained as an architect before travelling to Canada in 1858. He returned in 1870 and devoted himself to painting and writing. He produced at least 14 books, illustrated by himself, on places and towns in England - examples are Ancient Streets and Homesteads of England (1877) and Pleasant Spots around Oxford (1878).

The pictures are in excellent condition and are well framed. The signature on the picture with the sheep is less clear than on the other picture but is present. A very pleasant and gentle pair of old English scenes.

Date of Manufacture

Aramis Antiques has dated these Victorian Landscape Watercolour Paintings to the 1870s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Date 1874 inscribed beside the signature: fixes the year.
Watercolour washes on textured rag paper: period materials and technique.
Natural mellowing and pale toning across the sky: steady age.
Modern gilt moulding and clean mounts: later reframing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of Victorian watercolours dates from 1870 and depicts English countryside scenes created by the artist Alfred Rimmer. Each painting shows pastoral landscape subjects including stone buildings, bridges, and livestock rendered in warm brown tones. The artworks are executed in watercolour on paper and are protected beneath glass behind cream card mounts. The surrounding frames consist of gilt wood moulded in stepped profiles with beaded inner rims and corner joins. Each piece measures 29 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. These traditional paintings suit display in an English country house interior style. They work effectively when hung together in a living room, hallway, study, or positioned above a sideboard where their calm narrative subjects complement classic interior schemes. The works provide a cohesive visual pairing for wall decoration in residential spaces seeking historical charm.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century British watercolours are defined by atmospheric depictions of rural topography, architectural heritage, and natural light. Artists of this era frequently focused on pastoral scenes, village life, and historical buildings, utilising layered washes to capture subtle weather conditions.

Artists used water-soluble pigments bound with gum arabic, applied directly to heavy rag paper. These works were typically housed behind glass using acid-free board mounts and set within gilded wooden frames.

Authentic period watercolours show natural ageing such as light paper toning or faint foxing, period-appropriate backing materials, and fine hand-painted brushwork. Signatures, artist inscriptions, or exhibition labels on the reverse also help establish period authenticity.

Hang the pair vertically in narrow wall spaces or side-by-side above a sideboard or mantelpiece to create visual symmetry. The classic gold frames and muted earth tones complement both traditional timber furniture and contemporary minimalist schemes.

Display watercolours away from direct sunlight and artificial UV light to prevent pigment fading. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level and ensure the artwork is mounted using museum-grade, acid-free materials behind UV-filtering glass.
