Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The pedestal desk gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century, designed to provide substantial storage and a wide writing surface for office work and private studies. It consists of two supporting column pedestals containing drawers with a removable desktop section resting above.

Victorian desks were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and solid wood linings. The writing surface was typically finished with an inset leather panel, often decorated with blind or gold tooling.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetailing on the drawers, original brass locks with stamped maker marks, turned wooden drawer knobs or drop handles, and period-appropriate wear along the plinth base and drawer runners.

A classic mahogany desk works well when contrasted against lighter wall colours such as muted sage or cream, paired with contemporary task lighting, streamlined modern seating, and minimalist decorative accents.

Mahogany surfaces should be dusted with a soft dry cloth and treated periodically with natural beeswax polish. The leather inset requires occasional conditioning with a specialized leather balsam to prevent drying, cracking, and colour fading.
